For years, Android has been generating the lion’s share of mobile web traffic, thanks to its massive global user base, which grew even more with the rise of Chinese smartphone vendors. But in 2024, its dominance surged to new heights, reaching its highest share in years and leaving its biggest rival, iOS, far behind.

According to data presented by Stocklytics.com, Android accounted for a staggering 73.5% of mobile web traffic by the end of 2024, or three times more than iOS.

Record Annual Growth and the Second-Highest Share in a Decade

Android and iOS have battled for market dominance for more than a decade, introducing innovations and improving user experiences with every update. Both platforms have continually raised the bar to meet evolving user demands, propelling them far ahead of all other mobile operating systems.

While iOS, exclusive to Apple devices, has had better success in bringing its users up to date, Android’s open-source approach, allowing various manufacturers to modify and implement the OS, has fueled an explosion in Android-powered devices. This surge pushed Android’s share of mobile web traffic to all-time highs.

According to the Digital 2025: Global Overview Report, Android devices generated 73.5% of mobile web traffic in December 2024, marking a 3% increase from the previous year and the highest annual increase since 2015. Moreover, this is Android’s second-highest mobile web traffic share in a decade, trailing only behind 75.16% recorded in December 2018.

Android’s dominance becomes even more apparent when compared to other mobile operating systems in the smartphone market. Statistics show iOS hit a 26% mobile web traffic share in the same month, or three times less than Android. Far behind, Samsung stands in third place with a mere 0.31% share, followed by KaiOS (0.03%) and Linux/Windows (0.01%).

Android Gains Ground Even in the iOS-Dominated US Market

The rise of Chinese smartphone vendors has been the major driver behind Asia becoming and staying the top Android market, generating over 80% of total mobile web traffic last month, up 2% from the previous year. However, Android has been gaining ground even in the saturated and iOS-dominated U.S. market.

While iOS still accounts for the largest share of mobile web traffic in the United States, 57.7% as of last month, this represents a 3.5% drop year-over-year. On the other hand, Android’s U.S. market share jumped 3.7% in the same period, now reaching 42%.

The European market also remains highly dominated by Android devices. Last month, Android smartphones generated 65.6% of total mobile web traffic in the region, slightly down from 66% reported in January 2024.
