Over Half (56%) of US AI Patents Held by Computer and Phone Makers
Updated Jun 28, 2024
American computer and phone-making companies hold most of America’s intellectual property rights (IPR) licenses in Artificial Intelligence (AI). A Stocklytics.com data presentation shows that these firms hold 30,028 out of the 52,841 patents granted to date. The figure amounts to over 56% of copyrighted material.
This information has drawn reactions from industry analysts, including Stocklytics’ investment expert Edith Reads. She linked this high number of IPR acquisitions within the telecoms industry to increased technology adoption.
She said:
With advancements, our lives are becoming increasingly intertwined with technology. This has seen a corresponding rise in the development of technological gadgets and solutions catering to the market’s needs. Developers also fight to stay ahead by churning out innovations requiring IPR protection.

IBM Dominates Global AI Assignees List
Stocklytics’ report also shows that International Business Machines Corporation (IBM) has the most AI IPR licenses globally. The tech firm tops the top 10 global AI patents assignees list with 4,586 copyrighted materials. American firms take 6 of the 10 positions on the list.
IBM’s US arm is leading the American charge, holding 3,364 licenses—almost twice the 1,858 patents that Google’s parent company, Alphabet US, holds. Meanwhile, Microsoft follows closely with 1,747 IPRs.
Amazon, Intel, and Adobe Systems are other American entities on the list. Closing the top 10 are NEC Japan (897), NEC Corporation (879), and Intel Corporation (862).
The American AI Market Will Grow Exponentially
Edith concludes that the primary winner is the end-user, who can look forward to more efficient products and services. She also foresees the trend holding as we progressively embrace the Web 4.0 economy.
Her assessment concurs with Statista research, which projects that the American AI market will surpass the $220 billion mark by 2030. The study also suggests that consumer-facing applications and business operations will be the main drivers of this growth,
That explains why computer and phone manufacturers are keenly investing in AI. Other leading factors include the increasing availability of big data, the adoption of AI across industries, and its meshing with other technologies.
Statista reports that the healthcare industry will be a key adopter of AI technology, particularly in disease detection and personalizing treatments. The same goes for the customer support sector, where virtual assistants and chatbots are gaining prominence.
