The Number of Active Ethereum Addresses Jumped by 740,000 Year-over-Year
Updated Jan 16, 2024
Ethereum’s native token, Ether (ETH), has ended 2023 with a fantastic 85% gain, ranking just in the middle of the best performers in the crypto space. The price surge from $1,190 to almost $2,300 it reached last week drove a lot of activity in the Ethereum network and pushed the number of active addresses high above the levels seen last year.
According to data presented by Stocklytics.com, the number of unique ETH addresses active on the network has jumped by 740,000 in a year and hit almost 6.5 million.
1.73 million Investors Hold at least 1 ETH
The world`s second-largest crypto showed strong returns and relatively low price volatility last year but was still behind Bitcoin, Cardano, Avalanche, and Solana in year-over-year growth. All these cryptos saw triple-digit price growth in 2023, while ETH ended a year with an 85% gain, more than enough to drive trading activity in the Ethereum space.
However, the data from the crypto analytics platform Glassnode show Ethereum`s 2023 price jump was more interesting to crypto investors searching for a smaller investment chunk.
During the twelve months of the year, the number of active addresses in the Ethereum network that either sent or received ETH has jumped by 740,000 and hit 6.49 million. Although this was a substantial increase, the total number of active addresses is still way down from its all-time peak of 10.1 million recorded in May 2021.
The number of unique addresses holding at least 0.1 ETH has increased by 2% in 2023, rising from 5.12 million to 5.21 million. Statistics show the number of investors holding at least 1 ETH in their wallet has remained unchanged and stands at around 1.73 million.
On the other hand, big ETH investors have lost ground. Statistics show the number of Ethereum addresses holding 10 ETH dropped by 3% year-over-year to roughly 342,000 in December. The number of addresses with 100 ETH or 1K ETH in their balance also declined, falling by 8% and 10%, respectively. The Glassnode data also showed there are now 1,070 ETH whales or addresses owning 10K ETH, 11% less than a year ago.
Over 12,600 ETH Addresses Have $1M in their Balance, 53% more than a Year Ago
The Glassnode data also gave an interesting insight into the balance of ETH addresses measured in U.S. dollars. As of last week, there were 12,656 addresses with at least $1 million in their balance, or 53% more than in the same month a year ago. The number of ETH investors owning $100,000 jumped even more, surging by 63% to over 96,500 as of last week.
Statistics show there are almost 660,000 addresses with $10,000 in their balance, 60% more than in this time last year, while the number of addresses owning $1,000 and $100 worth of ETH jumped by 34% and 52% year-over-year, respectively.
